Galás is known for her arresting concert performances and has been seen in the Barbican Hall on several occasions. SPILL and the Barbican are proud to present this important film installation which deals with asylum institutionalisation, originally commissioned by New American Radio and the Waker Arts Center in Minneapolis (US). Witness several short performances over the space of twenty-seven minutes alternating extreme high-energy vocal work with absolute silence. These performances reflect the state of a patient subjected to torture through chemical or mechanical manipulation of the brain, kept in a confined space with periodically or randomly triggered bright light, heat, beatings or rapes. There is a high density of speech-sound over time which is often machine-like in its velocity. The work employs the atypical speech and vocal signal processing that Galás has been researching since 1979.

It is not enough to see or hear something once, there is always the need for repetition. Aside from maintaining a detailed diary, I continually document fragments of everyday life with my camera. The images I record never satisfy lived experience, they are simply marks that are barely able to prevent memory from completely vanishing. I never anticipate what images I’ll be able to capture. I only save them as a sign that something was there, or that I was there. “Recollection” is a troubling thing. What is filmed fails to supplement memory. Recorded images are left to haunt the mind, rendering true recollection impossible. In spite of this, I can’t help but rely on these images derived from reality, observing them over and over again. Perhaps, waiting for them to fulfill a potential some 60 years from now. Even if the image is a corpse, the work itself is a living thing. For in the end, there is always the need for repetition.

After accepting temporary work in a laboratory Cesar begins to notice strange events related to the treatment of a patient with the number 27, this disturbs him the extent of causing insomnia and hallucinations. Isela and Marcos, his coworkers attribute this to the Cesar fatigue, however the real reason for these views is more real and dangerous than they think.
